Company Shops Market Keeps Moving Ahead

On Sunday, November 11, 2007, more than 100 Alamance residents gathered at the farm of Board President, Sam Moore. Everyone that attended was anxious to hear about the vision for Company Shops Market and the progress that has been made in fundraising and in securing a location. More than $45,000 has already been raised through the sale of ownership shares (including 25 household shares sold that day) and the Community Investment Note Program. After the location consultant visits in early December, the board intends to make a decision regarding location of the Co-op. Melissa Frey, Project Manager, has been gathering information about locations in downtown Burlington and the Burlington Outlet Village (formerly BMOC). She and Sam stressed the importance of folks showing their support up-front for the Co-op, as that support is what will get the store open and operating with financial strength. The goal is to sell 150 more shares by December 31.

As Sam Moore spoke surrounded by rows of his apple trees and lettuces and cabbage, he stressed the importance of supporting local, sustainable food systems for our physical health and the health of our local economy and for food security. “We cannot entrust our well-being to mega corporations and food that has come from thousands of miles away,” explains Sam. “A community owned grocery store just makes sense.”
